Digestive Enzyme Quiz Answers:

1. What is digestion?

D) All of the above.

Digestion is the process that allows my food to enter my bloodstream to be used as nutrients.  Digestion is a process that starts at my mouth and ends when I pass the food out of my bowels.  Digestion is the process that my body uses to try and break down anything I put in my mouth and swallow.

2. My enzymes are responsible for cutting my food into millions of tiny pieces too small for me to see with my naked eye.
A) True

3. Where does digestion take place?

D) All of the above.

Different stages of digestion takes place in the mouth, stomach and intestines.

Mouth: The food is broken down into small pieces and the first digestive enzyme (amylase) is added to begin dissolving the sugar in the food.

Stomach: The food is churned for the first hour to allow the enzymes in the food to break down as much of the food as possible.  Then more digestive enzymes and acid are added to continue breaking down the food.  The food will be a paste (chyme) similar to baby food once it leaves the stomach.

Intestines: The mushy food will pass through the small intestines where it will mix with another set of digestive enzymes.  Finally, the nutrients begin to pass into the blood stream.  Now, all that is left of the food is watery fiber.   As the watery fiber passes into the large intestines the excess water is removed and microbes are added.  The addition of the microbes bulks up the food (now called stool, feces, manure and etc) and you have  the urge to pass it out of your body.

4.  When an apple falls from the tree and hits the ground, the part that hits the ground should ________.
B) turn brown

5. Why does the apple change colors where it hits the ground?

A) The apple changes colors because its enzymes get released in the area where it hit the ground.

The impact from the apple hitting the ground causes the tiny cells inside that part of the apple to burst open releasing many enzymes.  These enzymes act as knives or scissors cutting up the apple.  This will turn the apple into a brown mush that is perfect for feeding the apple seeds until the new tree develops enough roots and leaves to feed itself.

6.
Your digestive system is capable of digesting (breaking down) any food that you eat.

B)  False

Your body is not capable of completely digesting food all by itself.  It was never intended to do the bulk of the digesting.

7. Your food should supply the digestive enzymes needed to digest itself.

A) True

Your meals come with their own set of enzymes that will digest the food for you.  Unfortunately, the food you buy from stores has often had these enzymes destroyed.  Also, cooking food to 107 degrees will destroy the enzymes that should be functioning to break down the food when you eat it.

8. Unless your food is grown by someone you trust or is labeled USRDA it could have had radiation passed over it to make it last longer once it reaches the grocery store.

A) True

It is a standard practice to pass radiation over food to keep it looking better and make it last longer while it is at the stores.

9. Passing radiation over the food destroys the enzymes and prevents the food from digesting itself while it is sitting in the grocery story waiting to be purchased.  Unfortunately, this also keeps the food from digesting itself when it is eaten.
A) True

The radiation destroys the enzymes.  If an apple, for example, gets bumped while it is in the truck or being handled at the stored it won't turn brown because the enzymes have been destroyed.  The next time you purchase those big beautiful apples, feel them.  If you feel soft spots that are not brown, most likely, radiation has been passed over them.  If the apple can't help digest itself, then your body will have trouble digesting it.

If you are going to eat this type of food it will be helpful to take a capsule full of the proper type of digestive enzymes with each meal.  A qualified health professional should assist you in selecting the right group of enzymes for the types of foods you eat.  Call Optimum Health for assistance.

10. Cooking my food can destroy the enzymes needed for digestion.
A) True

Cooking changes the shape of the enzymes.  If you bend a pair of scissors, they may not cut anything ever again!  The same is true for the enzymes.  Once these enzymes are destroyed, they cannot help digest your food for you.

Some foods must be cooked to 107 degrees before eating.  However, most fruits and vegetables can and should be eaten raw.   If you prefer to eat most of your foods cooked, then a capsule full of the proper type of digestive enzymes with each meal can be very helpful.  A qualified health professional should assist you in selecting the right group of enzymes for the types of foods you eat.  Call Optimum Health for assistance.

11.  Not having the proper enzymes to digest your food can cause all of the following except:
E) an aching back.

It is typical to have gas and bloating with meals since the increased temperature causes the food to begin to rot while it is in your stomach.   When the food does not digest itself, you are not able to digest it fully.  This causes pieces of food that are not fully digested to cross over into your bloodstream.  Your body will give what is considered an allergic reaction to these pieces of food.   Finally, ridges will appear in you fingernails.  Try some enzymes and watch the ridges disappear!  Call Optimum Health for assistance selecting the right enzymes for your diet.

12.  What is the hour of predigestion?

C) The first hour after you eat your food when your body does very little to digest the food because your body is allowing the food to digest itself.

For the first hour after you begin to the food is chew, the stomach mostly churns to allow the food to mix with its own digestive enzymes and digest itself.  During this time, your body doesn't do much else to aid digestion.

The hour of predigestion should take your meal and turn it into small mushy chunks as above.

After about an hour of churning, your body will go to work adding digestive enzymes and acid.  Afterword, the food will be passed into the intestines where your body will continue to work hard to digest the food as completely as possible.  The goal is to make the food so small that you cannot see it with your naked eye.  It is when it is this small that it can easily cross into your bloodstream.

The goal of digestion is to breakdown your food so small that you cannot see it.
