Fiber Quiz Answers:

1. How much fiber should be in your diet each day?

B - 30 mg

If you have less than 30 mg you will not keep your intestines clean.  Your food will sit in your intestines for too long and begin to rot.  Think of a piece of meat sitting on your table at 98 degrees for two days.  It will smell terrible.  This smell will back up into your mouth at night and cause you to have bad breath in the morning.

2. How much fiber is required for a single meal to generate a bowel movement?

C - 6 mg

Each meal you eat should have at least 6 mg of fiber to help push the food along your digestive tract and out as a bowel movement.  This will allow you to have one bowel movement for each meal that you eat a day.  If you are having less than one bowel movement per meal, then your food is staying inside of you too long and can become dried out.  This will cause you to become constipated.

3. How do you know when you are constipated?

C) When you go more than 3 days without a bowel movement.

Though a doctor will not be consider you constipated unless you have gone 3 days without having a bowel movement, you may begin to feel bad long before that.  Going 24 hours without having a bowel movement can cause your blood to begin building up toxic garbage.  At that point the food is also rotting inside of you.  Think of a piece of steak sitting on your table when the room is nearly 100 degrees.  After a day or two, it will begin to stink.  This is exactly what happens when that piece of steaks sits inside your body at nearly 100 degrees!

4. Insoluble fiber is the fiber that:

A - Insoluble fiber stays in your intestines and gets passed as a bowel movement.

5. Soluble fiber is fiber that:

6. Which food is NOT an excellent source of fiber?

D - Potatoes

Most whole grains are excellent sources of fiber.  Since the fiber is what is thrown away when the grains are processed and turn into white rice, white flour and etc. Kale and collard greens are both decent sources of fiber.

7. Which food has the least amount of fiber?

D - Banana

Because bananas are high in sugar and low in fiber, they are one of the few fruits that will raise your blood sugar and cause an insulin response.  Whole grain brown rice and whole grain bran rice are excellent sources of fiber.  Most beans and nuts are also excellent sources of fiber.

8. Fiber is the part of your food that:

D - All of the above.

There are two types of fiber, soluble and insoluble.  Soluble fiber enters your bloodstream and clean your arteries.   Insoluble fiber stays in your intestines and bulks up your stool to create a bowel movement.  The insoluble fiber holds onto sugar and keeps it in your intestines longer so the sugar won't rush into your bloodstream.  Most food that are naturally sweet were designed with significant amounts of fiber.

9. Your stool is made up of:

C) More bacteria than fiber.

It is true that fiber is important to have regular bowel movements.  However, the intestinal bacteria is extremely important also as it makes up 60% of your stool.  Though this might not be the most pleasant topic for discussion, thinking about it long enough to make sure that your are giving your body what it needs to function properly is vital.  At Optimum Health we encourage good bowel movements by ensuring proper fiber and intestinal bacteria.
